If you smell gas, you should immediately put out all smoking materials and any open flames. In addition, do not use any cell phones, landline telephones, lights or appliances as sparks or flames from these sources might cause an explosion or fire. If you smell propane that you suspect may be leaking, immediately leave the area and get everyone out of the area or the building where you suspect that gas might be leaking. Once you leave the area, you should locate and shut off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank, once it is safe to do so.
Once you've exited the area and are safely away from the source of the gas smell, you should report the leak from a neighbor's home or other nearby safe location by calling Keene Gas immediately. If you can't reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department immediately. Above all, don't re-enter the building until your propane retailer or the fire department has determined that it is ok to do so.
Finally, you should always have a qualified service technician from your local propane retailer perform a complete propane system check on all of your propane appliances to make sure they are leak-free before you attempt to use any of them.
